RST Global Builds Fiber Network to Include Most of Rural N.C

07/30/2013

RST Global Communications of Shelby wants to light up rural North Carolina in a different way — by bringing fiber-to-the-business capabilities

Through some acquisitions of existing fiber-optic networks in the state, RST executives also believe they can help businesses that need fiber connections to expand in less populated regions.

We’re going from Manteo to Murphy and trying to fill all points in between

says Dan Limerick, chief executive of RST

That will allow rural areas to “level the playing field” with larger competitors by providing the same high-speed connections available in urban areas.

I first wrote about RST last October, when Limerick announced he wanted to connect homes, universities and businesses from Greensboro to Clemson, S.C., with fiber. He already had Infocrossing, the Wipro Ltd. data center in Cleveland County, as a satisfied customer.

Now, by acquiring fiber networks built but not in use in the state, Limerick believes RST can expand the size of its network to six times its original size to cover the entire state.

Next on Limerick’s list of territories: South Carolina.

He’s also working on spreading fast Internet and phone connections to neighborhoods wirelessly. Limerick says he hopes to roll out the first wireless community programs in next year’s first quarter.
